English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

The OACES ESL Program offers adults with limited English language proficiency a variety of language learning opportunities to improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Beginning to advanced classes are offered day or evening by experienced and qualified teachers. Instruction is tailored to the individual’s needs, including those who are preparing to enter the workforce and/or higher education. Areas of instruction include, but are not limited to: conversation, grammar, computer, vocations, and life skills.

To enroll in the ESL Program:

  • Go to OACES, 30 Hart Street, Rochester, Room 216, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm
  • Please bring two forms of ID and your Social Security card, if you have one
  • Complete an Individual Student Record Form (ISRF) and bring to intake for enrollment if you have printing capabilities or you can print the form at OACES.

OACES also offers free English classes for adults at the following locations/days/times:

  • Webster Schroeder High School: 875 Ridge Road, Webster, NY 14580
    Monday through Thursday, 5 pm to 8 pm
  • Irondequoit Library: 1290 Titus Avenue, Rochester, NY 14617
    Monday through Thursday, 5 pm to 8 pm
  • Fairport Public Library: 1 Fairport Village Landing, Fairport, NY 14450
    Monday through Thursday, 5 pm to 8 pm
  • Mary’s Place: 414 Lexington Avenue, Rochester, NY 14613
    Monday through Friday, 12 pm to 3 pm
  • Maplewood YMCA: 25 Driving Park Avenue, Rochester, NY 14613
    Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5 pm to 8 pm
  • World Relief: 420 North Winton Road, Rochester, NY 14610
    Monday through Thursday, 4 pm to 7 pm

High School Equivalency Diploma (GED)

OACES provides a High School Equivalency Diploma (GED) Program that focuses on preparation for the high school equivalency exam. The GED Program includes diagnostic services as well as a core curriculum and career counseling. We offer group and individualized instruction in math, social studies, science, writing, and reading. Students are required to take a reading and math entrance test and are assigned to classes according to reading levels.

To enroll in the GED Program:

  • Go to OACES, 30 Hart Street, Rochester, Room 205 on Mondays or Tuesdays at 9 a.m. (students should arrive no later than 9:30 a.m.)
  • If you are 21 years old or older, please bring a state-issued ID card and your Social Security card. If you are under 21 years old, please bring a state-issued ID card, your Social Security card, your birth certificate, and a drop letter from your last high school.
