The OACES Carpentry class provides participants with an introduction to the basic techniques necessary fordesigning and building furniture and an array of wood products. Topics will include safety, measuring, use of hand and power tools, fork lift training and the basics of production building for retail sales. Upon completion of this training, participants will be prepared for entry level employment in industrial or private wood working environments.
Training Duration: Approximately 200 hours.
Schedule: 2 hours of Literacy class plus 4.5 hours of CTE class Monday through Friday. Actual times to be determined upon enrollment.
Class open to: All students.
Prerequisites: Exemplary attendance, the ability to work with others in a group, the ability to work in a safe and productive work environment.

• According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary of carpenters was $39,940 in May 2012.
• Employment of carpenters is projected to grow 24% from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. Job prospects for carpenters should improve over the decade as construction activity rebounds, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
• Carpenters have the opportunity to work a variety of jobs within the carpentry career cluster. Most move from one outside project to another. Therefore carpentry provides an attractive alternative for those who dislike desk work or an inside office setting.
• There is the attractive option of being your own boss. A skilled tradesman can start as a freelance carpenter for hire with smart marketing and making the right connections. Start with small projects; these may eventually lead to bigger and more enriching ones.
